QUESTION:- DO IDENTICAL TWINS HAVE IDENTICAL FINGERPRINTS?
ANSWER:- Identical twins come from the same fertilized egg and share the same genetic blueprint, therefore, they share similar physical and behavioral traits. They are indistinguishable on DNA test.
Identical twins may have the identical distribution of fingerprint patterns on their fingers but they do not have matching fingerprints.
Fingerprints are largely shaped by a persons DNA and by a variety of environmental forces. The different fingerprint patterns i.e. Arch, Loops, Whorls and Composites are distributed across different fingers with dissimilar ridge characteristics or minutiae or the Galton details as they are otherwise known as. Mostly, identical twins have similar arrangement of patterns.
It has been over 120 years of official fingerprints usage for identification, but till date no two fingerprints have been found identical, i.e. having identical minutiae in their nature and relative positions.
Francis Galton, who is regarded as the father of fingerprints also emphasised upon the two fundamental qualities of fingerprints, namely
A) UNIQUENESS (an impression given by one finger will be identical with the impression of the same finger of the same person), and
B) PERMANENCY (from womb to tomb, the impressions will be permanent, and there will be no change in their minutiae distribution).
THE CONCLUDING LINE: Identical twins never have matching fingerprints.
